Madame Bovary begins with Charles Bovary's early years in school. Although he is not a particularly talented young man, he is pushed into medical school by his mother, who compensates for her lack of affection with her husband by doting tirelessly on her son.

The novel begins by introducing us to a teenaged Charles, awkward, mild, dull, and studious. After struggling though primary school and a series of courses in medicine that he finds inscrutable, Charles passes his exams and becomes a doctor. Thus Emma Bovary was a middle-class woman who could not stand the middle-class life. She spent her entire life in an attempt to escape from this middle-class existence by dreams, love affairs, and false pretensions. Emma possesses one quality that the other characters do not have. Emma Bovary is the novel's eponymous protagonist (Charles's mother and his former wife are also referred to as Madame Bovary, while their daughter remains Mademoiselle Bovary).
